Born in Syracuse, New York, Calvin Dean was raised by his mother, his father having passed away four months before his birth. He has a brother, William, a jazz musician in Montreal, Canada, and two half-sisters, Marion in Virginia and Linda in Chicago.

Calvin Dean started his career as a model in New York City with the Ford Agency, where his Calvin Klein Obsession ad was a magazine mainstay for years. He then played professional baseball in the minor leagues for four and a half years, but injuries led to his retirement from the sport. Following his passion, Calvin attended the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.

Next, he moved to Los Angeles. Calvin's athletic ability led him to stunt work, which he continues to do in his films and TV appearances. In Hollywood, California, he studied theater with Howard Fine, Brian Reese, and Stuart K. Robinson.
